Termination of parental care due to small clutch size in the temperate damselfish,Chromis notata

Synopsis Reproductive behavior of the temperate damselfish, Chromis notata, was investigated on the island of Mukaishima, Japan, almost daily during the breeding season in 1982. Both males and females repeated reproductive cycles many times during the breeding season. Females had a strong tendency to spawn a whole clutch on one nest during a few hours. The average number of eggs which a male gained per reproductive cycle was estimated at 38560 (480–131100 eggs). Males ordinarily cared for eggs until just prior to hatching, but abandoned more than half of the nests with the eggs numbering less than 11568. 泥河湾层中新发现一处旧石器地点

半个多世纪以来,在泥河湾层中寻找早更新世时期的人类遗迹,已成为中、外许多科学家非常关心的一个问题。近几年来,在泥河湾村附近,大量古文化遗物从属于下更新统的泥河湾层中发现了。新的发现为旧石器时代考古学和第四纪地质学又增添了新的内容。     

中国人ε珠蛋白基因5′侧序列中多态性Hinc Ⅱ位点的进一步研究

本文进一步研究了我国不同民族的正常个体以及β地中海贫血患者θ珠蛋白基因5′侧序列中的多态性HincⅡ位点及其遗传性质。在广西壮族正常个体和β地中海贫血纯合子中,该多态性位点的发生频率均为75％,与正常汉族人测得值相近。家系分析资料表明,该多态性位点完全按照孟德尔规律进行遗传。     

Bovine Nucleus Caudatus Acetylcholinesterase: Active Site Determination and Investigation of a Dimeric Form Obtained by Selective Proteolysis

Abstract: The number of catalytic subunits of purified bovine nucleus caudatus acetylcholinesterase (E.C. 3.1.1.7) has been determined by active site labelling with [³H]diisopropyl fluorophosphate ([³H]DFP). The 10.5 S, 16 S, and 20 S forms were estimated to contain two, four, and six active sites, respectively, per molecule. A 4.8 S form, which showed a weak amphiphile-dependent activity behavior, was obtained by selective proteolytic digestion with pronase. The inability of the purified 4.8 S form to aggregate after detergent removal, and the molecular mass in the range of 130-165 kD under nondenaturating conditions, indicate that this form is a dimeric form, lacking those hydrophobic regions responsible for aggregation.     

Phospholipid-Sensitive Ca2+-Dependent Protein Kinase Preferentially Phosphorylates Serine-115 of Bovine Myelin Basic Protein

Phospholipid-sensitive Ca2+ -dependent protein kinase (PL-Ca-PK) and cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase (A-PK) both preferentially phosphorylated serine residues of bovine myelin basic protein (MBP). Tryptic peptide maps of MBP phosphorylated by PL-Ca-PK or A-PK, however, revealed different phosphopeptides, suggesting a difference in the intramolecular substrate specificity for the two enzymes. Serine-115 of MBP, in the sequence (-Arg-Phe-Ser(115)-Trp-), was found to be a preferred and probably major phosphorylation site for PL-Ca-PK. Because serine-115 of bovine MBP corresponds to serine-113 of rabbit MBP, an in vivo phosphorylation site reported by Martenson et al. (1983), and PL-Ca-PK is present at a very high level in brain and myelin, it is suggested that the enzyme may be responsible for the in vivo phosphorylation of this and other sites in MBP.     

Spatial relationship among individuals of the Japanese lacertidTakydromus tachydromoides (Sauria,Lacertidae)

The home range ofTakydromus tachydromoides was studied in a grassland area from April 1977 to November 1978. The mean size of home range did not differ markedly between sexes; 136.5 m² for males and 130.8 m² for females. Home ranges of adults overlapped greatly in each sex, and the lizard was considered to be non-territorial. Individuals showed return movement to a definite area (sleeping site) within the home range, and the home range did not shift within a year or between years. Characteristics of the home range of this grassland-inhabiting lizard were discussed in relation to resource abundance and predation pressure.     

Titration of the binding sites for the oligomycin-sensitivity conferring protein in beef heart submitochondrial particles

The binding parameters of the oligomycin-sensitivity conferring protein (OSCP) in inside-out particles from beef heart mitochondria have been tested by means of two assays, the oligomycin-sensitive ATP-Pi exchange, and the oligomycin-sensitive ATP hydrolysis. The total number of OSCP binding sites in A particles was equal to 220 pmol/mg particle protein. Each mole of ATPase active site was able to bind 1.1 +/- 0.5 mol OSCP with Kd 1.7 nM.
